HANDS (Helping Area Needs for Diverse Services) of Wyoming County is a 501(c) 3 non-profit organization whose mission is to improve the quality and availability of early care and education in Wyoming County. This is done through implementing planning strategies, supporting growth and development of high quality early child care, and making sure early child care staff are well trained and informed with the latest information about the care of children. HANDS also advocates for early education by informing policymakers and the community about current issues, challenges and opportunities surrounding early care and education.

Would you be interested in donating materials or funds to expand the Educator/Parent Resource Lab? Would you be interested in helping to provide special programs to children and families in Wyoming County? Could you spare some of your time to help out at the Center with projects or programs?

Pre-K Counts

HANDS of Wyoming County, owner and operator of Mehoopany Nursery School a Licensed Pennsylvania Department of Education Private Academic School, has been named Lead agency for PA Pre-K Counts in Wyoming County. The new role partners HANDS with Keystone College Children's Center and Child Development Center, Tunkhannock, giving 96 area children quality preschool opportunities.

If we want a good quality of life, high-quality jobs and a strong economy for Pennsylvania, we need to provide opportunities to every Pennsylvanian. Early education can open the doors of opportunity for every child to do well in school, in the workforce, and in life.

Quality pre-kindergarten benefits children and families today and tomorrow, and greatly benefits Pennsylvania in the future.

The Pennsylvania Pre-K Counts pre-kindergarten program, established by the Pennsylvania Department of Education, will make quality pre-kindergarten opportunities available to children and families across the commonwealth. The Pennsylvania Pre-K Counts program:

  • is based on the quality components adopted for pre-kindergarten by the State Board of Education;
  • provides families in participating communities with a choice of quality pre-kindergarten options in a school, child care center, Head Start, or nursery school;
  • increases access to quality pre-kindergarten to children and families throughout the commonwealth with a priority in at-risk communities; and
  • builds on the work of the Pre-K Counts Public-Private Partnership for Educational Success, a three-year project funded by leading Pennsylvania foundations and supported by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.

Early results from this public-private initiative find that children's early learning improves when all early learning programs in a community share resources to improve quality and coordinate early learning experiences in pre-kindergarten, kindergarten, and beyond.

Pennsylvannia Pre-K Counts is a grant-funded program established by the PA Department of Education. All classroom locations are subject to grant funding and approval.

If you are interested in enrolling your child in pre-school, please DOWNLOAD the application form and send via email or US postal mail.
